Abstract
The amount of water in a tetrahydrofuran-water mixture, which may also contain glycerol, is reduced by adding glycerol in such an amount that two layers are formed and separating the two layers. Up to 50 per cent of water and not more than 65 per cent of glycerol may be present in the mixture treated. The proportions used are preferably those of the azeotropic mixture of water and tetrahydrofuran. Fractional distillation of the tetrahydrofuran-rich layer removes the azeotropic mixture leaving the anhydrous tetrahydrofuran. Glycerol may be recovered for re-use from the other layer. The treatment with glycerol may be effected on the countercurrent principle and both the treatment to recover glycerol and the distillation to recover anhydrous tetrahydrofuran may be continuous.
