[Class 38(v)] Electric switchgear, such as an isolating fuse, comprises fixed contacts 11, 16 and a co-operating conducting element, such as a fuse carrier 13, which is supported at its lower end by links 14 so as to permit both axial and pivotal movement of the carrier, and is adapted to enter a bell - mouthed guide 8 when in the "on" position shown. The carrier may be retained in the "on" position by any suitable means, and in the arrangement shown, a plate 20 attached to the end of the fuse wire (not shown) and pivoted to the end cap 12 has a hook which normally engages a catch 21. On fusion of the wire, the catch is disengaged and the carrier falls first axially and then pivotally to the fullyopen position (Fig 4, not shown). Interengaging stops may be provided on the links 14 and the lower end cap 17 so as to limit the amount of clockwise pivotal movement, thereby ensuring alignment of the carrier and the guide 8. The latter is slotted at one side to permit entry of the pole-engaged arm 15 and has an arcing horn on each side of the slot. The carrier may be removed from the links 14 when in the fully-open position by means of an upward movement of the carrier to permit the carrier pivot to disengage from guard surfaces 19 on the links.
