[Class 56] [Also in Group XL(a)] Vitreous or ceramic material is joined to carbon by depositing a film of elemental boron on the surface of the carbon at a high temperature before the plastic material is placed thereon. The invention may be used for joining a graphite electrode of an electric discharge device to the glass support therefor, or for coating a carbon conductor employed as a resistance unit for an electric heater to prevent oxidation thereof. The boron binding layer may be applied by votatilising B 2 H 6 or other hydride or by votatilising a boron halide in a reducing gas or by applying finely divided boron and a binder.
