Abstract
628,825. Gunnery training devices. ALRIC, G. C. A. Sept. 3, 1946, No. 26511. Convention date, April 26, 1940. [Class 119] A gunnery training device for practice in shooting at moving targets comprises a spotlight projector and a target-image projector, the latter moving across a screen, a target image whose size depends upon the range for which the gun is sighted, and the former being mounted on the gun barrel and being controlled by a trigger having a delayed action so that the time which elapses between the pressing of the trigger and the appearance of the luminous spot on the screen is equal to the projectiles time of flight for the chosen range. In the form shown the target image projector 1 projects a representation of a target on to a screen 10 representing a landscape or clouds, the position of the projector and, therefore, of the target on the screen being controlled by movement of a style 7 which follows a path on the map 9 conforming to the contours of the landscape shown on the screen 10. The size of the target is dependent on the distance between the style 7 and the vertical pivot of the projector and is controlled by the thread 13 which may move a mask 20, Fig. 2, with respect to the V-slot 19 in a plate 18 to alter the size of the target before projection. The elevation of the projector can be adjusted by means of the bar 16 which can be raised and lowered by a cam having graduations corresponding to the contour lines 11 on the map 9. A shooting projector is mounted on the gun (not shown), and pressure on the trigger causes a delay mechanism to work giving a delay corresponding to the time of flight of an imaginary projectile. After such delay a shutter opens and a spot of light is projected to record the point of aim. The delay set in is controlled by the thread 14 also depending on the distance between the style 7 and vertical pivot of the target projector. The thread may, in one example, control the inclination of a tube down which a ball runs to actuate, at the end of its run, an electric contact controlling the shutter.
