Abstract

Methylol melamine or a copolymer thereof with methylol urea is condensed by agitation at 30-100 DEG C. with an aminocarboxylic or aminosulphonic acid or alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof. If desired, melamine and formaldehyde or melamine, urea and formaldehyde may replace the methylol derivatives. The products are water soluble and particularly suitable for tanning or finishing leather (see Group VIII). Suitable amino acids are alanine, glycocoll, b -aminobutyric acid, anthranilic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid, taurine, b -aminopropane sulphonate, sulphanilic acid, orthanilic acid, metanilic acid, 1-naphthylamine-5-sulphonic acid, 2-naphthylamine-5,7-disulphonic acid, 2-naphthylamine-6,8-disulphonic acid, aniline disulphonic acid, 4,41-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid, 1 amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid, 1-naphthylamine 3,6,8-trisulphonic acid. The solution of the condensation product may be heated at a pH of 5 to 7 to promote further polymerization and increase the viscosity of the solution. For stability during storage, alkali, e.g. borax or caustic soda should then be added to a pH of 9-11. Many examples are given, all of them employing condensation products of melamine and formaldehydes.
