Abstract
628,448. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. FELL, L. F. R. Oct. 13, 1947, No. 27428. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XXVI, XXVII and XXXIV] At least two compressionignition engines A, B, supercharged by a compressor 2 driven by an independent engine 3, are connected to the sun wheels 26, 27 of a differential gear, the planet carrying member 30 of which is connected to the output shaft. As shown, two further engines C, D are similarly connected and the output shafts are connected to the sun wheels 32, 33 of a further differential gear, the planet carrying member of which is connected through a shaft 42 and a reversing gear to the driving-wheel axle 35 of a locomotive. The engines 3, 8 also operate by compressionignition and the fuel pumps thereof are controlled inversely as the speed of the main engines by a governor having variable spring control. Each fuel pump control rod 48 is moved by the linkage shown in Fig. 3. A piston 53 is subject to lubricant pressure acting through a connection 55a and, if the lubricant pressure should fail, a spring 54 and a floating lever 50 allow the rod 48 to cut-off the fuel supply. During steady motion, the control rod 48 is moved by a piston 56 subject to liquid pressure, e.g.. that of the lubricant, operating through a port 65 and controlled by a valve piston 63, which is moved by boost pressure acting on a piston 72 or by a centrifugal governor 84. The governor weights operate through a rod 87 on a valve 100 which admits pressure liquid to move a slave piston 97 coupled to a floating lever 80. The pressure liquid may be supplied by a gear pump driven by the governor shaft, and located in a casing enclosing the governor weights. The weights are loaded by four springs 89, 90, 91, 92 which come into action in succession as their abutment piston 93 is moved to the right in slave fashion by pressure fluid admitted by a valve 116. In the case of the main engines these valves are operated manually by links 130, Fig. 1, from a lever 128, but in the case of the compressor engines 3, 8 they are operated by boost pressure acting on a piston attached to the valves to maintain constant boost pressure, but relief valves 6, 11 and an isolating valve 12a are also provided. An over-riding manual control for the fuel pumps may be provided.
