Abstract
627,967. Liquid electrode cells. RAVENSCROFT, A. W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1945, No. 23946. [Class 41] A cell particularly for the electrolysis of brine comprises a trough-shaped base 1 supporting a flowing liquid electrode, e.g. of mercury, and is provided with solid electrodes 9, e.g. of carbon supported with their undersurfaces parallel to and a short distance above the liquid electrode by a cover 4 having a skirt 7 entering a channel 2 on the base containing a thermoplastic sealing material 3 resistant to the gases evolved, e.g. a normally solid chlorinated naphthalene containing 45-55 per cent of chlorine by weight; the inter-electrode distance is adjusted by means of screws 6 on the cover, the thermoplastic material being first melted by heating means, e.g. a steam coil 8 or an electrically-heated insulated wire. One or more gas off-takes 12 are provided. In a modification the base 1 is raised on girders so as to be slightly inclined, and the cover is supported from the floor on pillar bolts, the base of the channel and the bottom of the skirt 7 being, however, horizontal in the working position. If, however, the base of the channel and the bottom of the skirt are parallel to the base 1 the cell must be brought to a horizontal position before melting for adjustment. The solid electrodes may substantially fill the upper part of the cell. The heating means may be secured to the lower edge of the skirt and in good thermal contact with it. Specifications 597,387, 597,389 and 597,441 are referred to.
