Abstract

627,146. Bearing linings. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 18, 1947, No. 16048. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1943. [Class 12 (i)] A cut-away portion left by projections 52, 54 on the edge of staves 26, 38, co-operating with a projection 56 on their adjacent staves 28, 36 permits peripheral swelling in a bearing, thereby preventing shaft seizure, when its staves are immersed in liquid after a period of dryness. Plain staves 24, 30, 34, 40 are also used together with a two-part longitudinally tapered stave 32 whose members 46, 48 wedge the other staves between a keeper strip 20 secured by screws 22. The staves, of heat hardening resin impregnated laminated fibrous material, are so machined that their laminations are perpendicular to the shaft circumference as shown on stave 30, and are provided with lubrication grooves 50. In a modification a single stave may have the projections 52, 50 on one edge and projection 56 on the other, one such stave being arranged with each of two groups of plain staves located between two keeper strips.
