626,783. Starting prime movers. ROTAX, Ltd., and PHILIPP, W. May 8, 1947, No. 12454. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A prime mover is started by a motor having a polyphase stator and a two-phase rotor having three slip-rings, two of which are connected respectively to ends of the phase windings and the third to the joined opposite ends of the windings while the resistance in the rotor circuit is adjusted by a speed responsive device. As shown, a contact 12 is moved over two resistances (not shown), connected to the free ends of the rotor windings by a reversible motor 15 with a control relay 22, 23, energized when the governor 29 controlling carbon resistance 26 upsets the balance of the bridge containing resistances 24-27, the motor 15 adjusting resistance 27 until balance is restored. In another form, energization of relay depends on the relative voltage magnitudes of a supply source and an auxiliary generator coupled to the main motor. The motor can operate as a generator by supplying D.C. to the two phase windings connected in series.
