[Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XX] A torque balancing device for controlling the rotation of an indicating instrument movement comprises means for balancing the torque at small angles of rotation and a lost motion device between the movement and means for providing supplementary balancing of the torque at larger angles of rotation. A stub-shaft 1 mounted in a ball-bearing 4 is secured by a flange 2 and screws 3 to one end of a gyroscope assembly. A member 12 is clamped to the stub-shaft 1 and has two arms 14, 14<SP>1</SP>. One end of a tension spring 16 is anchored to a pin 15 on the arm 14, while the other end is anchored to a threaded tension adjusting rod, so that the spring 16 balances the torque of the shaft 1 due to the gyroscope. Another member is clamped to the stub-shaft 1 and has an arm 21 parallel to the arm 14<SP>1</SP>. A sector-plate 22 with arcuate slot 23 pivots on the shaft 1 between the arms 14<SP>1</SP> and 21, which are joined by a pin 24 passing through the slot 23. A second spring 30 is anchored to the sector 22 and to a threaded tension adjusting rod, so that for greater angles of rotation when the pin 24 engages the end of the slot 23, the spring 30 assists the spring 16 in balancing the torque of the gyroscope. The end of the arm 21 is linked to a piston 27 of a dash-pot 28 for damping purposes. Further springs may be introduced at greater angles of deflection. Other lost-motion devices may be employed, e.g. the sector 22 may be provided with spaced pins for co-operation with the arm 21 or a plate rigid on the shaft 1 may have pins to co-operate with a loosely pivoted arm.
