Abstract

625,533. Piezo-electric crystal mountings. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21774. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1941. [Class 40 (v)] A piezo-electric crystal element is clamped by its periphery between a fixed electrode and a frame work, the other electrode being hinged to the framework to permit adjustment of the air-gap. As shown, the hinged electrode 51, Fig. 5, is incorporated in a plug-in holder, Fig. 4, having the supporting pins (not shown) in its base. A crystal plate 40 is supported between raised corners of the fixed electrode 50 and corresponding projections on a frame 52. This frame, which slides into grooves 61 in the sides of case 10 has an aperture, opposite the middle of the crystal, in which the second electrode 51 is hinged by a spring 72 fastened to the frame and if desired insulated therefrom. The fixed electrode 50 is pressed against the crystal by a V-shaped spring 56 bearing on a plate 54 which rests on the far side of the case. The hinged electrode is adjusted by a nut 80 having a nose (not shown) bearing on the electrode and which screws onto stud 82 secured to part 83 of the frame. The edge 86 of the nut is calibrated and may be secured by means of a toothed part 85 engaging the milled part 87 of the edge. The crystal and fixed electrode are supported by an insulating block 58 pressed upwards by a spring 47 in the base of the case and sideways movement is prevented by a bow-spring 43 bearing against an insulating strip 45, and a further bow-spring 48. A gasket 92 between the top-plate 11 and the case and a further gasket and cover (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) seal the container. The frame and electrodes may be made of nickelsilver though the frame may alternatively be made of an insulating material.
