625,344. Ammunition. ETABLISSEMENTS E. BRANDT. May 17, 1947, No. 13337. Convention date, June 5, 1946. [Class 9 (i)] A projectile body 1 is attached to a cartridge holding tail 2 having fins 3 by a nipple 4, having two axially stepped cylindrical bearing surfaces, an annular housing in the projectile accommodating a deformable member 9 which is compressed by the nipple to form a fluid-tight joint. In addition the deformable member comprises a malleable metal. sheath containing a deformable material. The body 1 is made from a tube machined and shrunk to provide front and rear ogival portions and the tail is made from a drawn steel tube. The nipple is screw-threaded at each end to fit into tapped openings 6, 8 in the projectile and tail respectively. Two coaxial cylindrical recesses 10, 11, Fig. 2, accommodate cylindrical bearing surfaces 12, 13 on the connecting nipple. The larger recess 10 houses the member 9 which comprises a deformable annular metal sheath 20 having a circular slit 21 on one side and filled with a compressible material 22 such as cardboard. As the tail and connecting nipple are screwed into the body 1 the member 9 is deformed to the shape shown in Fig. 4. A circular groove 23 on the bearing surface 12 is provided to break up the jet of gases propagated towards the joint when the cartridge is fired. The nipple 4 is coated with varnish and a mass of pitch 24, Fig. 1, is placed in the rear of the projectile to increase the fluid-tightness. In a modification the nipple is integral with the tail, which is machined from a bar.
