625,294. Carrier transmission. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., THORNTON, A. M., PRIOR, H. T., and GOULLEE, S. J. Nov. 29, 1946, No. 35465. [Class 40 (iv)] In a multi-channel system, two or more telephone channels may be replaced by a wide-band channel for the transmission of music &c. by the operation of switches controlling the carrier supply to the channel equipment. As shown for a 12-channel system, with the switches 24, 25, 29 in the lower position, the carriers are fed from the source 19 to the telephone channel equipment 1. Whereas with the switches in the upper position, the carriers F and I are transferred to wide-band channel equipments 2, 3, and the carriers of the other replaced channels D, E and G, H are suppressed. The switches may be arranged so that only one wide-band channel may be brought into service. The wide-band equipments are coupled to the line 17, 18 through hybrid coils 56, 58-60, Fig. 5, and may comprise separate modulating and demodulating apparatus, Fig. 3 (not shown), or reversible apparatus, Fig. 4 (not shown). Compander apparatus may be employed to reduce interference between two wide-band channels.
