Abstract

625,158. Treating refuse. PITROIS, G. Jan. 31, 1947, No. 3093. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1946. [Class 111] In charging and discharging cells for the fermentation of garbage and the like, at least one separating element is introduced into the cell, the fermented matters below it are extracted, the element is withdrawn to allow matters above it to fall to the bottom of the cell, and the empty space thus formed at the top of the cell is filled with new matter, the volume comprised between the element and the bottom of the cell being substantially equal to the volume occupied after fermentation by the quantity of new matter introduced during the filling. In the operation of the cell shown, a separator 8, which may be in the form of a grating, is introduced into the cell between guides 10 after removing a cover 11. The fermented matters lying between the separator 8 and a bottom grating 3 then fall out of the cell on removal of an airtight door 4 and a retaining grate 6. The grate 6 and door 4 are replaced, and the separator 8 removed, when matter within the cell falls to reoccupy the space thus vacated. A volume of new material which, after fermentation, would occupy a volume equal to that between the separator 8 and the bottom grating 3 is then introduced through a top opening 1, normally hermetically closed by a cap 2. Fermentation liquid is sprayed at P upon the matters being treated, and leaves at E, and air is circulated from the bottom of the cell to the top by blowing or aspiration.
