624,854. Surface and outline gauges. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and BIGGS, R. H. Dec. 13, 1945, No. 33837. [Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] Apparatus for indicating the profile of a work-piece comprises a pivoted follower arm adapted to traverse the profile and a pivoted repeater arm actuated by the follower arm, the follower and repeater arms having respectively exploring and tracing parts of finite size and effectively of circular cross-section so that the tracing part will sweep a path whose width is also finite and of which one side is always related in shape to the profile traversed by the exploring part and the tracing part being combined with an optical projector so that a shadow of the tracing part is projected upon a screen. The apparatus shown incorporates two pairs of follower and repeater arms so that both sides of a profile may be examined simultaneously. A turbine blade 1 under test is mounted on a support (not shown) adjustably secured to a base 3 having guides for a transversely movable support 5. Two rigid extensions of the support 5 carry respectively a pair of follower arms 9, 19 and a pair of repeater arms 12, 20. The arms are in the form of bellcrank levers and the follower arms, which may be spring-loaded to ensure contact with the test surface, are connected to their respective repeater arms by links 14, 21, one of which may be adjustable. The exploring and tracing ends of the follower and repeater arms respectively are preferably formed by rotatably mounted balls. An enlarged image of the tracing end of the repeater arm is projected on to a screen 17 by means of a light source (not shown), a collimator 15 and a lens 16. The base 3, which carries the lens 16, may be arranged to slide on rails in order to vary the degree of magnification or lenses of different focal lengths may be used. By traversing the support 5 and observing the position of the image on the screen at intervals, the profile may be checked against an enlarged true profile. Specification 616,970 is referred to.
