[Class 40 (ii)] In a recording apparatus employing a magnetic medium, high-frequency attenuation and other defects caused by variation in the magnetic properties of the medium are avoided by recording a carrier wave of 15 to 20 kcs/sec. modulated by the desired intelligence. In a preferred embodiment, frequency modulation is used, in which case amplitude attenuation or any similar form of distortion is immaterial, as the modulation amplitudes are represented by time differences between carrier cycles. It is found desirable to make the carrier waveform as near square as possible. This may be obtained by making the high positive and low negative parts near or past the saturation value of the medium, or by the use of a suitable carrier-frequency oscillator. Reproduction is effected by demodulating by means of a conventional integrator, amplifier and limiter, followed by a low-pass filter, frequency discriminator and detector.
