Abstract

624,461. Lift fork trucks. COBB, Z. L. Nov. 20, 1946, No. 34417. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1945. [Class 78 (iii)] A package lifting truck of the kind having an elevating mechanism attached to a vertically disposed lifting frame provided with pick-up blades extending forwardly from the lower portion of the lifting frame and provided with means for laterally moving the blades against opposite sidewalls of the package to be lifted is characterised by the inclusion of a back plate which can be raised and lowered through means controlled from the lifting truck and the blades being slidingly attached to said back plate. The elevating mechanism, which may be tilted about a pivot 25, Fig. 1, on the truck 20 by a hydraulic mechanism 26, consists of a pair of inner channel members 35 braced to form a frame which is adapted to slide inside an outer frame consisting of braced channel members 32 to the bottom bracing 33 of which is attached the lower end of a hydraulic piston and cylinder device 40, the upper end of which is attached to a member 36 at the top of the inner frame. The member 36 is also attached to a pair of sprockets 37 which carry chains 38 attached at one end to the bracing 33 and at the other to a plate 39 connected by a plate 44 to a pair of " I " beams 42 which are guided by rollers 46 attached to the channel members 32. The beams 42 carry blades 48, Figs. 1 and 2, connected to load gripping bars 65 which may be spiked, faced with semi-rigid abrasive material or shaped as in Fig. 12 to engage under the load, said blades having shanks 49, extending inwardly at right-angles, which slide in guides 50. When the piston and cylinder device 60 moves links 58, Figs. 2, 5, and toggle levers 55 an equalizing member 56 pivoted to the plate 44 allows an even pressure to be exerted on each side of the load. Stop blocks 68, of various sizes, placed in the guide 50 allow the bars 65 to grip the load without applying a damaging pressure. A horizontal plate 73, adjustable on the beams 42, carries a resilient pad 72 which engages and stabilizes the top of the load. In a modification (not shown) two other types of equalizing members 56 are described.
