Abstract

624,261. Lasting welted shoes. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). June 21, 1947, No. 16445. [Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] With a view to getting a better crease in the toe end of the upper of a welted shoe, the upper is trimmed, prior to lasting, in such manner that that portion only of the upper, e.g. the upper proper, which occupies after lasting a position upstanding against the welt attaching lip a, is reduced in thickness compared to the portion which overlies the insole feather, as shown. For this purpose, it is outspread over toe lasting wipers which position it in relation to the edge of the insole, as described in Specification 553,881, and which are of such thickness and so positioned relatively to the feather, at the time when the trimming knives operate, and to the adjustably mcunted trimming knives, that an inner portion of the upper which would otherwise lie against the lip is removed.
