623,221. Radio signalling. ARMSTRONG, E. H. Jan. 11, 1947, No. 999. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (v)] At a relaying station for receiving a frequency-modulated carrier of predetermined frequency and re-transmitting it with a small frequency increment or decrement as in Specification 623,219, an oscillator is provided for generating a local frequency and multiples thereof, and an auxiliary oscillator of lower frequency for providing the desired increment or decrement of the carrier wave frequency. The received wave is first heterodyned to an intermediate frequency by an harmonic of the local oscillator, and the auxiliary oscillation is heterodyned with the fundamental of the local oscillator to provide either a sum or difference frequency. Whichever of the latter is chosen is then raised in frequency by adding to it the intermediate frequency and an appropriate harmonic of the local oscillator and the resulting wave is transmitted. The re-transmitting aerial may be at some distance from the receiving aerial, and the local and auxiliary oscillators may be arranged near the re-transmitting aerial. Cables may convey the local oscillations to the receiving circuits, and the intermediate frequency to the transmitting circuits. Specification 426,228 is referred to.
