Abstract

623,183. Coating paper &c. webs. DEHN, S. G. (Minnesota & Ontario Paper Co.). Jan. 30, 1946, No. 3056. [Classes 96 and 140] A travelling web of paper &c. 11 is coated with an aqueous composition containing, e.g. clay, calcium carbonate, satin white, starch, glue and casein by forcibly raising the composition to the nip between a metering roll 26 and an applicator roll 23 from which the composition is transferred to the web backed by a roll 22. The amount of coating applied is regulated by controlling the speeds of the rollers. The coating composition, e.g. is pumped from a tank 28 through a cooler 56 to a " fountain " 27 wherein the stream of composition is deflected by a baffle 59 to the nip between rolls 23 and 26 which, together with doctors 62 and 64 close the top of the " fountain," the ends of which may be sealed by dikes. A smoothing roll 65 may be used and may be separated from roll 23 by a motor acting on an arm 70. Rolls 26 and 22 may be mounted between hinged arms and moved from or pressed towards roll 23 by pressure cylinders connected to lever lugs on said arms. Before being coated, the web may be brushed by rotary brushes.
