Abstract

623,089. Road traffic signals on vehicles. HAVERS, SIR E. W. May 30, 1946, No. 16468. [Class 118 (ii)] A motor road-vehicle signalling system is operated in two stages of which the first comprises the movement of a semaphore arm or the illumination of a representation of a suitable symbol and the second comprises the illumination of the arm, or the movement of an element articulated thereto, or the extinguishing of part or all of said representation and the simultaneous illumination of an adjacent part or whole representation to give the illusion of movement of the representation. When a driver, in response to a signal, has overtaken another vehicle he moves a switch c to position a to raise a semaphore-type direction indicator and then either depresses the switch c or moves it to a further position a<SP>1</SP>. This has the effect of illuminating a suitable inscription or other symbol on the arm or moving a model hat, arm, or thumb, mounted thereon, in order to acknowledge the courtesy shown by the driver being overtaken. The control switch c may in positions a and b operate a normal direction indicator arm and when depressed light the panels d and e, Fig. 2, of a sign representing a man the illumination of the panel e fading after a short interval and the panel f being illuminated. The successive illumination of panels e, f may be accomplished by manual or thermostatic switch means. Other symbols may be similarly illuminated. In combination with the visual courtesy acknowledgement there may be provided an audible signal which may take the form of two horn notes or the reproduction by known means of spoken words, a peal of bells, or a tune.
