Abstract
A courtesy signalling device (12), for fitting to the rear of a road vehicle, comprises a model of a human hand, formed with the fingers clenched and the thumb extending upwards, and means for illuminating the model hand to provide a visual signal to other road users. The illumination is preferably in the form of a green light.

COURTESY SIGNALLING DEVICE
The present invention relates to a courtesy signalling device for road vehicles, particularly commercial vehicles.
The roads are becoming increasingly busy particularly with goods or other commercial vehicles. Further, a variety of different methods are used for the drivers of such vehicles to signal to each other, to indicate that it is safe to overtake or carry out other manoeuvres. All of this contributes to increasing the dangers on the roads.
I have now devised a courtesy signalling device for use on road vehicles, which can alleviate the above problems.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a courtesy signalling device for a road vehicle, the device comprising a model of a human hand, formed with the fingers clenched and the thumb extended upwards, and means for illuminating the model hand to provide a visual signal to other road users.
In use, the model hand is fixed to the rear of the vehicle and an actuator is provided on the dashboard for the driver to use when desired to illuminate the model hand, for example to signal to the driver of a following vehicle that it is safe to overtake.
Preferably the model hand is formed with a generally flat rear face for fitting against a rear surface of the vehicle. Preferably the model hand is formed with means (e. g. a number of screw holes) for fixing it to the vehicle.
Preferably the model hand is hollow and houses an electric light which is energised to illuminate the device from within.
Preferably the model hand emits green light, preferably by use of a green light bulb: preferably the model hand is of a white or neutral coloured material, particularly a transparent or translucent plastics material.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of a vehicle equipped with a

courtesy signalling device in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a view of the dashboard within the vehicle shown in Figure 1 ;
FIGURE 3 is a rear view of the vehicle shown in Figures 1 and 2 ;
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged view of the courtesy signalling device ; and
FIGURE 5 is a correspondingly-enlarged side view of the device.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, there is shown a van 10 which is equipped with a courtesy signalling device in accordance with the invention. The device comprises a model hand 12 mounted to the rear of the van 10, adjacent its top, off-side corner. The model hand 12 is in the form of a hand in which the fingers are clenched and the thumb T is extended upwardly, in the manner which is customarily used to signal"OK".
The device or model hand 12 has a flat bottom provided with holes enabling it to be fixed, using screws or bolts, to the rear of the vehicle. The model hand is hollow and houses an electric light: the device is formed of transparent or translucent material, to emit light when its internal electric light is energised.
Within the vehicle, an actuator 14 is provided on the dashboard, for depression by the driver to energise the light in the device or model hand 12. The driver may therefore cause the model hand 12 to illuminate whenever desired, particularly to indicate to the driver of a following vehicle that it is safe to overtake. Preferably the model hand 12 is arranged to emit green light when illuminated.
Claims (6)
