[Class 45] A fence rail made of concrete or like aggregate has a series of circumferential nicks or V-shaped grooves and a core portion which in the planes of the grooves or nicks is not integrated or less integrated than elsewhere, so that the length may be adjusted by cleavages at the grooves or nicks. As shown in Fig. 1, a straight or curved rail reinforced by an iron bar 3 has a number of V-shaped grooves 4 at each end, and in the centre also, if desired. Inserts 5, Fig. 3, of semi-dry concrete are moulded in the rail with their edges in alignment with the grooves. The top rail has one longitudinal groove 2, Fig. 2, to receive palings and intermediate and bottom rails have two such grooves. The palings, Fig. 11, are made of plain or reinforced concrete and may be rectangular or any other suitable shape in elevation; the top and bottom edges may be grooved to take a reinforcing tie-bar and can be at 90 degrees to the sides or at any desired angle to allow for ground slope. The palings may have projecting nibs 24 with circumferential grooves to allow the paling width to be adjusted by breaking away part of the nib; alternatively, they may have a stepped cross-section, Fig. 12, the steps 28-31 permitting overlap or not, as desired. The posts, Fig. 7, may be of concrete, wood or other suitable material and have any desired number of sides. Channels 16 are provided in one or more sides to take the rails and palings. Channels 17 permit passage of the rail reinforcing bars 3. Holes 19 for fastening hinges &c. may be provided if desired. The Provisional Specification describes a method of erecting the fence by using a telescopic aligning bar which engages the top of two adjacent posts and which can be adapted to form a screed for applying cement.
