Abstract

622,740. Typewriters &c. HOFGAARD, R. May 20, 1946, No. 15237. [Class 100 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (b)] A device for printing a line of type comprises a number of type-wheels 2 mounted on and normally rotating with a cylinder 1, but adapted to be displaced angularly with respect to the cylinder by being locked in a stationary position during predetermined movements of the cylinder by pins 3, one for each wheel, engaging spaces between the type. Each typewheel is mounted between annular discs on the cylinder 1 and is recessed to receive springs 5 causing it normally to rotate with cylinder by friction. The pins 3 are operated by electromagnets energized by electrical impulses controlled by a perforated card or in any other suitable manner. In the case of type-wheels each carrying 64 type, to set the type-wheels the cylinder 1 makes a complete revolution in a series of steps corresponding to 1, 2, 4, 8, &c. type respectively, and each type-wheel is locked by its pin 3 during the steps for which the sum of the numbers of type included in the steps is equal to the sequence number of the type to be selected. The type-wheels are brought back to zero by a similar series of operations during a succeeding revolution of the cylinder.
