Abstract

The methane fermentation of manure and similar substances is effected in a fermentation vat having a dome covering the said vat and encircling it peripherally and storing the methane produced, the lower edge of the dome being immersed in a liquid seal, and the dome being displaceable vertically in relation to the vat under the action of the methane produced whilst its lower edge remains immersed in the liquid seal. The liquid seal may include a channel for the liquid whose inner wall is constituted by the wall of the vat. The vat may be open at the top with its walls perforated to permit liquid manure to form the liquid seal, and furnished with a pump spraying device, or, preferably, may be closed and furnished with means for automatic spraying by liquid mixture forced up by gas pressure as described in French Specification 818,680. The vat and gas-holder may be thermally insulated and heating or cooling means provided.
