Abstract

621,275. Dynamo-electric machine casings. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 14, 1947, No. 4268. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1945. [Class 35] Each end-shield of a dynamo-electric machine has an outwardly open recess closed by a removable cap and enclosing a bearing and its lubricating means, the cap carrying resilient mounting means for the machine. As shown for a split-phase induction motor, the end shields 2, 3, have annular wall portions 12 surrounding the bearings 7 and containing oilsaturated wicking 14 held in contact with the shaft 6 by a spring 16. The open end of the bearing housing is closed by a metal cap 20 which is pressed into the annular wall 12 and is used to support the machine. The resilient mounting comprises a rubber moimting ring 24 bonded to the cap and also to an outer metal ring 25 by which the cap and hence the whole motor is clamped to the base 26, 27. Oil is inserted by a hole 17 and is prevented from reaching the motor interior by an oil thrower 18 which, for ease of assembly, is preferably of rubber. A rubber sealing washer 32 is provided at the driving-end to prevent the oil escaping along the motor shaft. As shown in Fig. 3, the end cap may be provided with a pair of internally threaded studs 34 for the mounting of a condenser.
