[Class 17 (i)] Apparatus for activating cement on soles by exposing them to an atmosphere of hot air and water vapour, as described in Specifications 567,076 and 582,698, is characterised by improved means for feeding the soles into and removing them from the treatment chamber while minimising the ingress of cold air to the chamber, for superheating the vapour-laden air before it enters the chamber, and for controlling the temperature and relative humidity of the atmosphere in the chamber. Soles are supported in the chamber 12 by a plurality of carriers 84 each of which is connected by a link 86 to a lever 90 which cooperates with a respective cam 92 on a shaft 94. The latter is driven by a motor 32 acting through a belt 34, a shaft 110, and a clutch so arranged that it can be engaged by operation of a treadle 148 and is automatically disengaged when the shaft 110 has made one revolution, i.e. when one cam 92 has operated on its respective lever 90 to move its carrier out of the chamber for unloading and loading while an adjacent cam has allowed its carrier to return under spring action into the chamber. The front of the chamber is provided with a series of narrow, spring-closed doors corresponding to the several carriers which are opened by the carriers as the latter move outwardly, and re-close automatically. Compressed air is forced through water which is heated in a tank 16 equipped with an electric heater and a thermostat. The vapour-laden air passes by a pipe 44 to a superheater 46 at the bottom of the chamber 12 and thence into the chamber through perforated pipes 64. The superheater consists of a block 48, Fig. 6, with sinuous passages 50, 51 in its lower and upper surfaces and enclosed by cover plates 52, 54. An electric heater and a thermostat are embodied in the block: A further electric heater and thermostat are provided in the upper end of the chamber 12 further to control the condition of the atmosphere therein.
