Abstract

<PICT:0620765/III/1> <PICT:0620765/III/2> Apparatus for determining the constitution of a material having a transformation point of temperature, comprises two chambers, one of which is adapted to contain a reference material having a transformation point near that of the material under test, and the other to contain the material under test, the arrangement being such that the two materials are caused to pass through their transformation points at least partially concurrently, and means for measuring the temperature difference between the materials in the chambers. The apparatus is especially adapted for determining the composition of lead-tin solder used for soldering the seams on tin-plate, and as shown (Fig. 2), consists of chambers 33, 35, supported by a long arm 31 formed with a handle 30. Chamber 33 contains the reference material, say pure lead, and chamber 35 is apertured at 36 so that solder may flow thereinto when the chambers are dipped in the solder bath. Wells 37, 38 in the chambers accommodate a thermopile 40 connected to an ammeter graduated in terms of tin percentage, and provided with a short-circuiting switch. Chamber 33 is preferably of smaller volume than chamber 35. Fig. 4 shows (1) the cooling curves 13, 17 of the lead and material under test respectively, and (2) the temperature differential curve. The steady deflection represented by part 22 of the lower curve is an indication of the composition of the solder.
