Abstract
620,480. Phase difference and power factor measurement. O'BRIEN, W. J. Aug. 23, 1945, No. 21665. [Class 37] A phase meter or comparable instrument is characterized by a field structure which comprises a main frame defining an axis of rotation and having two pairs of field coils mounted coaxially thereon at right angles to one another and equidistant from said axis of rotation. As shown in a preferred form for inclusion in a registering goniometer the field structure is made up of a moulded rectangular frame 36 having a central bore 43 for a permanent magnet rotor 26 and four radially extending ribs 44-47, one from the centre of each side face thereof, to provide seating surfaces for four identical rectangular coil bobbins 37a, 37b, 38a, 38b, the dimensions of which are so chosen in relation to each other and the frame 36 that one pair of coil bobbins 37a, 37b disposed vertically against the opposite faces of ribs 45, 47 overlaps and is locked to the other pair of coil bobbins disposed horizontally against ribs 44, 46. The width of the ribs 45, 47 may be such as to space apart the centre of each pair of coil bobbins a distance equal to the identical effective radius of each coil bobbin. The assembled positions of the coil bobbins form a square hole at each end of the field structure through which extends the rotor shaft 7 which, as shown, drives a system of differential gearing similar to that in an electric supply meter to indicate the accumulative angle change between potentials applied to the respective pairs of field coils. In a modification a rotating coil structure wherein the coil is housed in recesses within a rectangular moulded block, Fig. 6 (not shown), supersedes the permanent magnet rotor 26.
