Abstract

620,317. Moulding contact lenses. TARTARI, R. A. Aug. 28, 1946, No. 25855. [Class 87 (ii)] A process for moulding contact lenses of thermo-plastic material comprises the following steps :- (1) obtaining an impression of the front surface 37, 38 of the eyeball as shown in Fig. 2 ; (2) modifying, in accordance with the needs of the patient, the central corneal part 37 of the impression by means of a male die 32 with an optical curve as shown in Fig. 3; (3) filling the remaining portion of the impression with gypsum &c., so as to obtain a plaster cast 39 of the outer sclerotic surface 38 of the eyeball; (4) removing the cast now united with the male die 32 and together comprising a mould from the impression ; (5) placing the mould so formed in a muffle -furnace 41, a corresponding female die 43 being placed on the male die 32 and the remaining part of the muffle 41 being filled with gypsum &c. which once it has set and is united with the female die 43 provides a negative or mould backing as shown in Fig. 4; (6) placing a laminÓ 46, Fig. 6, of thermoplastic material between the mould and mould backing, softening it by heat and after placing a metal filling 47 between the mould and mould backing, applying pressure to the assembly; (7) allowing the thermoplastic material to cool and finally dismantling the assembly. Apparatus for modifying the central corneal part of the impression comprises a rod (23, Fig. 1, not shown), fitted at its lower end with the optical curve male die 32 and slidable in supports 14, 16, the rod 23 being provided with micrometric axial displacing means 20 and screws 28 for centering the rod in relation to a semi-spherical cavity 4 in which the receptable 9 containing the impression is placed.
