Abstract
619,989. Conditioning shoe stiffeners. JOHNSON, J. E. Oct. 28, 1946, No. 31860. [Class 17 (i)] Toe puffs. and stiffeners of the kind which are impregnated with a solution of celluloid or other material which can be softened by a solvent are conditioned prior to insertion in shoes by subjecting them in a container to a vapour of the solvent above atmospheric pressure. The stiffeners may be supported on a perforated partition 5b of a drum 5 placed in a container 1 having an air tight lid 2. Solvent, or absorbent material saturated with solvent, may be placed in the container below the partition 5b and similar absorbent material may be placed around the sides of the drum. Evaporation of the solvent increases the pressure above the liquid : if desired, this pressure may be further increased by applying heat. Solvents may be mixed with alcoholic derivatives to have a constant rate of evaporation.
