619,400. Glass manufacture. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Dec. 6, 1946, No. 36172. Convention date, July 6, 1943. [Class 56] In apparatus for making glass strip by extrusion through a slot 10 in the bottom 4 of the furnace, a nozzle 8, 9 is formed at each end of the slot, the axes of the nozzles being in the direction of flow through the slot. The internal diameters of the nozzles are greater than the depth of the slot and the outlets of the nozzles are lower than the outlet of the slot, whereby the strip is formed with rod-like edges 15, 16 which lessen the tendency of the strip to contract. The nozzles are provided with axial slots 11, 12 facing the slot 10 but not extending for the whole height of the nozzles, the upper ends being blocked off by dams 13, 14 to cause the junctions of the rods and web of the strip to be sharply defined. The rods may be removed by passing the strip between pressure rollers which smash the rods but leave the web intact, or the strip may be broken into laminµ which may be separated from the smashed rods by putting the mixture in a flow of liquid so that the rods sink and the laminµ pass on.
