618,646. Power hammers &c. HOMELITE CORPORATION. Nov. 7, 1946, No. 33097. Convention date, Oct. 11, 1945. [Class 124] A power-driven impact tool comprises a double-ended piston element 16 operable in a cylinder element 17 with compression chambers 80, 81 at opposite ends and an intermediate portion open to atmosphere at 43, the two elements being reciprocable within a casing 11 carrying a tool 19 and also reciprocable relative to each other, and a rotary powerdriven means is connected to one of said elements to reciprocate it and compress air alternately in said opposed compression chambers and cause the other element to reciprocate and strike the tool 19. In the form shown, the piston 16 is reciprocated by an electric motor 13 through the intermediary of a pin 48, a crosshead 55 slidable in a guide 56 in a removable cover-plate 12, a connecting rod 15, a stud 57 mounted eccentrically on a gear 64 on a countershaft 14, and a pinion 68 on the motor shaft 66 which also carries a fan 67. The cylinder 17 carries a ram head 20 and is provided with grooves to engage guide tracks 36 adjustably secured to ledges 32 supported by ribs 33 on the inside of the casing 11.
