Abstract

618,622. Securing propellers to shafts. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Nov. 5, 1946, No. 32806. Convention date, April 29. [Class 80 (ii)] In a device for coupling a driving shaft with a propeller hub or the like, split ring housings 22 extend laterally from one end of a sleeve 18 keyed to the shaft 12 and resiliently support hollow trunnions 35 by means of rubber bushings 26. Flanged sleeves 32, 37 are mounted on the driving sleeve 18 and bolts 52 secure together the flanges 32b, 37b, hub 11a and trunnions 35. The bushings 26 have metal casings 27 which are clamped between the split ring housings 22 by bolts 24. Wire mesh 'screens 28 embedded in the bore of the bushings 26 prevent shearing of the rubber. Trunnions 35 have portions 35a engaging apertures 34 in the flange 32b of member 32. A fragmental spherical ring 31 is disposed between a bevelled portion 32c of the sleeve 32 and a similar portion of the sleeve 18. A nut 40 and locking ring 44 are threaded on the outer end portion of the sleeve 18, and a fragmental spherical thrust face 41 on the nut engages a similarly shaped seating 39 bearing against the flanged sleeve 32. Notches in the flange 42 of the nut 40, in the locking ring 44, and in the end face of the sleeve 18 may be engaged by a tool for tightening purposes and by an angle-piece for locking in position. A nut 50 is threaded on the portion 12b of the shaft 12, and beam against a washer 49. In operation, the drive is transmitted from shaft 12 to the sleeve 18, then through the rubber bushings 26 to trunnions 35 and so to sleeves 32, 37 and hub 11a.
