Abstract

618,196. Filters. CANDY, F. P. Nov. 1, 1946. No. 32436. [Class 46] For the operation, backwashing, and air-scouring, of filters of discrete materials, there are provided water nozzles having openings which are larger than the sand grains and which are protected by a packing layer, and air nozzles having openings which are smaller than the sand grains and which discharge the air into the sand above a sufficiency of the packing, the air nozzles having hollow stems which depend into the common supply of water and air and have apertures for the entry of the air. As shown in Fig. 1, a combined air and water nozzle located in a reticulation pipe 2 comprises a slotted dome 3 attached to a central member 4 screwing on to the common stem 7 and provided, with holes 5, the dome base being closed by a disc 15. The stem 7 has water openings 6 in the lower part and air openings 8, 8A in the upper part above a partition 16, the air passing out through openings 9 into an annular space 10 between the stem and a ring 11. The ring is provided with projections on its upper and lower surfaces and preferably also around its periphery to allow the air to escape but prevent the ingress of sand. The floor 1 of the filter is covered with packing material which may extend half way up the air nozzle, a layer of filtering sand being laid on top, for use with a filter having a false floor instead of a pipe reticulation system, separate air and water nozzles are provided, each having a relatively long stem, the air nozzles being set with most of the stem above the floor, the lower end being closed and lateral air-holes provided below the floor-level. The water nozzles have only the domed part above the floor-level, and the stem is open at the bottom only. This arrangement may be adopted when reticulation pipes are embedded in e.g. a concrete floor. An alternative arrangement combining air and water nozzles is shown in Fig. 4, where waste water enters by the bottom open end of the stem 7 and air by holes 8 and 8A into the stem 7A. A further combined arrangement is shown in Fig. 3, in which water enters the open end of the stem 7 and air enters through holes 8 and 8A. Specification 534,312 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
