Abstract
617,103. Fibrous material agglutinated by adhesives; impregnating apparatus. BRITISH BELTING & ASBESTOS, Ltd., and DRAKE, R. May 24, 1946, No. 15826. [Class 140] Impregnated fibrous material convertible by moulding or pressing into material having substantial mechanical strength is made by forming fibrous material into a continuous fleece which is cross-folded to form a multi-layer continuous web, impregnating the multilayer web with a liquid, hardenable, bonding medium and consolidating the web by pressure. The pressure, in addition to expelling excess bonding liquid may be adjusted to return bonding liquid may be adjusted to retain ing medium. If desired the consolidated web may be cut in lengths to form suitable blanks for subsequent moulding. Fillers such as fibrous glass, zinc, brass, rubber, iron oxide, rottenstone wood-flour may be introduced into the fleece prior to folding, in powdered or comminuted form by a hopper whose base is a rotating grooved roller. The fibrous material may be asbestos, cotton, wool, silk, rayon, glass, flax, hemp, jute or sisal, alone or in any desired combination. Metallic elements in the form of threads, strips, wires, fabric or mesh may be embedded in the impregnated web or introduced as a backing or reinforcing means conveniently during the consolidation. The figure shows a form of apparatus for effecting the impregnation and consolidation of the folded web 21, by carrying the web through a pair of vertical lattices 23 which press the layers 21 into a continuous thickened web 24, the latter being then conducted by guiding surface 25, formed as a side of the tank 26 through rollers 29, beneath the liquid 30 which may be liquid phenol formaldehyde resin and the saturated web 24 then conducted to the nip of rollers 31, 32 and consolidated into a continuous coherent web 33, the excess liquid being collected in trough 34 and conducted back to tank 26 by drain pipe 35 One or both rollers may be heated to induce suitable reaction in the bonding medium. The blade 38 may cut the web 33 into lengths 41 which may be subsequently dried and moulded. The treated fibrous material may be used for friction pads clutch facings, brake linings and brake blocks.
