616,983. Gearing for conveying rotary motion. COCKRANE, A. P. M., (formerly MILL, A. P.). Feb. 28, 1946, No. 6309. [Class 80 (i)] In gearing of the screw-and-nut type, particularly for the steering mechanism of vehicles, the axial movement of a nut N on rotation of a screw-shaft B is converted into rotary movement of a shaft S, such as a steering drop arm shaft, by the engagement of a pin 50 on the nut with a lever arm R on shaft S through a ball-and-socket connection with a block 55 sliding in a radially disposed slot 56 in the lever arm R. The interengaging surfaces 59 of the block 55 and the slot 56 are suitably radiused to provide thrust surfaces to enable any wear to be taken up by an adjusting screw 60. An extension 52 of the pin 50 is provided with a roller 58 working in a guide slot 53 in the cover-plate C of the mechanism. Specifications 502,745 and 616,979 are referred to.
