Abstract

In a method of cleaning magnetic heavy media the medium to be cleaned is subjected to sizing in the damagnetized state and hydraulic classification in the magnetically flocculated condition. These steps may be performed in any order, but the medium before re-use must be in the demagnetized condition. The sizing operation may comprise tabling or screening, the former being preferred when the density of the medium is not high, e.g. in coal cleaning, and the hydraulic classifier may be of any known type. A preferred cleaning process comprises magnetically flocculating the medium, subjecting it to hydraulic classification, e.g. in an upward current classifier, demagnetizing the medium subjecting it to a screening operation, magnetizing the clean medium, subjecting it to thickening, demagnetizing and returning it to the separating system. The sink and float fractions are treated separately in parallel circuits and the valuable contaminant of the medium is recovered.
