[Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XIII] A heat-exchanger with a wall folded in a zig-zag manner has the ends of the channels so formed closed by folding-in the material of the strip at the end of each channel so as to form a zig-zag folding with more than twice the number of partitions of the main zig-zag portion of the wall. As shown in Figs. 3-5, a strip to be folded has at one end a broken outline B1-B3-C1-C2-B4-B6 &c. Parallel folding lines A1-A2, A3-A4 are used to obtain the zig-zag formation. Inclined folding lines B1-B2, B2-B3, C1-C5, &c., leading from the corners formed by the broken outline, are utilized to fold the material in at the end of the channels and so provide additional end surfaces to which a welding bead 10 is applied, to close the slits between the folds. The chambers with which the channels communicate are separated by a partition wall 9 which is attached to the welding-bead 10 by two welding beads 11, 12 (Fig. 4). Other ways of cutting and folding the strip are described, of which Fig. 15 is an example. The partition wall (Fig. 10) may be formed in two halves 16a, 16b, each half having a bent end engaging behind projections 14, 15 formed by suitable folding of the metal strip, the slits between the folds being closed by solder 18. Closing folds may be formed at each end of the channels in the metal strip and the strip then bent to form a cylinder 27 surrounding the working chamber of a motor as in Fig. 12. The ends of the channels have a conical surface e closed at the top by a welding-bead 19. The wall 20 separating the two chambers has a conical boundary surface 21 secured to the welding- bead 19 by a welding-bead 22 of triangular section. The bottom of the channels is closed by a welding-bead 23 secured to a partition 24 by two welding-beads 25, 26. Protuberances 28 on the metal strip 27 abut against each other to prevent deformation of the heatexchanger due to the difference in pressure between the gases in the two systems of channels. The partition walls may also be fastened to the heat-exchanging element by artificial resins.
