Abstract

616,159. Electric indicating systems. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 20, 1945, No. 24403. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1944. [Class 40 (i)] In a signalling system, e.g. an engine-room telegraph system, at least two handle-operated transmitters are electrically connected to a receiver in a selsyn arrangement, and means operate automatically, when one transmitter handle is moved through a predetermined angle, to energize a motor or motors to move the other handle or handles through substantially the same angle. In Fig. 1, movement of a transmitter handle 11 or 11a operates, through couplings and gearing, a self synchronous transmitter unit 62 or 62a connected to a self synchronous receiver unit 79 coupled through gearing to an indicator 74, free to rotate on a shaft 72. The self synchronous units are energized from an A.C. source 81, 82. The transmitters are identical and initial movement of either handle, say 11, strains a flexible coupling (16) so that a contact (23) connected to a slip ring (13) touches one side or the other of 'a slot (18) in a disc (17) connected to a slip ring (25) and thereby operates a relay (95) which energizes a solenoid (48a) to release a clutch (49a) in the drive between the other handle (11a) and its associated transmitter unit (62a). The latter is then free to rotate as a receiver unit, together with the receiver unit proper, 79, in correspondence with transmitter unit 62. This results in the movement of a contact (57a) co-operating with conducting segments (46a, 47a), which are separated by an insulating segment (45a) and associated with slip rings 42a, 43a, to form a follow-up switch controlling a split field motor (38a) which drives transmitter handle (11a) into correspondence with unit 62a and, therefore, transmitter handle 11. Brakes normally applied to motors 38 and 38a are released by the energization of windings 111 and 113, in shunt and series with the motor armatures, respectively, when the motors are operating. The brake windings 111 and 113 are also energized by relay 95 or 95a which connects them across source 81, 82, when a transmitter handle is moved, to reduce the resistance to movement of the handle. Movements of indicator 74 are acknowledged by a reply transmitter handle 71 which is moved manually into correspondence with indicator 74 and operates through gearing a self synchronous transmitter 73 connected to self synchronous receivers 69 and 69a, respectively, coupled to indicators 64 and 64a free to rotate on the transmitter handle shafts. Various constructional arrangements of combined transmitter and reply indicator are described, Figs. 2-5 (not shown), one of which is of the double handle, double indicator type.
