564,119. Automatic control systems for ships, aircraft, &c. GALE, F. W. J., and BROWN, Ltd., S. G. March 16, 1943, No. 4250. [Class 38 (iv)] Steering.-In a system in which a rudder or other steering unit operates in response to the action of a direction-sensitive switch 15, controlled by a compass repeater 25, 26, in order to ensure adequate movement of the rudder or the like a switch 31 having a twice-delayed closure is inserted in the circuit between an impulse transmitter 29 associated with the rudder power unit 1 and the step-by-step motor 28 actuating the follow-up on the directionsensitive switch. The delay action switch may comprise a disc with arcuate contacts 36 connected to each of the transmitter leads and fixed insulating arms 37, each carrying a set of contacts 38 connected with the step-by-step motor leads. The disc is operated by an auxiliary step-by-step motor 34 connected to the transmitter 29 so that the motor is not operated until contacts 38 and 40 engage. The distance between the arms 37 is adjustable to determine the time delay. In a modification, the disc carries two sets of contacts brought alternatively into abutting engagement with contacts 38, the disc being driven through a slipping clutch.
