Abstract
Aliphatic mono-olefines other than ethylene are treated in the liquid phase at -50 DEG to 150 DEG C. and at atmospheric, raised or reduced pressure with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen in the absence of a catalyst, but under the influence of ultra-violet light. Under these conditions an olefine CnH2n yields an unsaturated hydroperoxide CnH2n-1OOH as the main reaction product, but unsaturated aldehydes, ketones and acids may also be produced. An example is given in which amylene (mainly trimethylethylene) is treated with oxygen at atmospheric temperature and pressure in an irradiated quartz tube to yield a product containing 3 - methyl - 2 - butenyl hydroperoxide (Me2C : CHCH2OOH) and 2-methyl-2-butenyl hydroperoxide (MeCH : CMeCH2OOH); these compounds yield unsaturated alcohols by reduction with sodium sulphite. Other specified starting materials are propylene, n-butene-1, n-butene-2, isobutene, n-pentene-1, n-pentene-2, n-hexene-2, n-heptene-3 and mixtures of mono-olefines with one another or with other substances, e.g. paraffins.
