Abstract
The residues from the refining of borate ores, containing boric oxide and other acid or amphoteric oxides such as silica, alumina, and iron oxide, are heated sufficiently to cause the oxides to interact and produce relatively insoluble and non-poisonous borosilicates. The residues are first dried and then heated to approximately 2000 deg. F. Sufficient lime or dolomite to provide equimolecular amounts of basic and acid or amphoteric oxides may be added to provide, at about 2250 DEG F., a free-flowing product which can be poured to form monolithic foundations, or fiberized to produce a mineral wool.
