Abstract

613,120. Feeders for furnaces. HARTFORD EMPIRE CO. Nov. 23, 1945, No. 31646. Convention date, Aug. 28. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XII] A feeder for glass batch, Fig. 1, comprising a batch chamber 3 with an outlet; a batch pusher 24 comprising an arcuately-curved member 25; a lever 34 fixed with relation to the pusher so as to oscillate the pusher in the chamber toward and away from said outlet about an axis 30 coincident with the axis of curvature of the pusher; a crank 49; a connecting rod 54 having one end mounted on the crank 49 and the other adjustably connected to the lever; said connecting rod including a spring 61 arranged to be compressed if the pusher is obstructed in its movement toward the cutter so as to allow the movement of the pusher to be halted, without halting operation of the crank. Fig. 1.-Carriage 11 is moved up to the opening 93 of the furnace and glass batch is supplied to chamber 3 through shoot 84, and pushed inside by pusher 24 moving in a curved path between arcuate surfaces 25. Pusher 24 is attached by lugs 40 to the pair of lever arms 34 which pivot at 30. Power is transmitted. from motor 8 through shaft 44 to shaft 47, Fig. 3, which rotates eccentric 49 and through connecting rod 54 pivoting on pin 63 swings lever arm 34 about its pivot 30. Fig. 3.-Rod 52 has thread 53 for adjustability of length and carries nut 60 and spring 61 so that, if the forward swing of the pusher is jammed, the spring will yield as the rod moves downwards and damage will be avoided. Length of stroke of the pusher 25, Fig. 1, is varied by handle 70 which rotates simultaneously, the two screws 65 which are coupled by chain 69, and varies the positions of pivot pin 63 in slot 64. Adjustable springs 73 are attached at 74 to lever arm 34 and effect the return stroke of lever arms and pushers. Fig. 5.-The pusher 24 passes through an aperture which is in the lower extension 79 of the shoot 84 and which has cleaning means 82 secured therearound so as to wipe the surface of the reciprocating pusher. Asbestos gasket 114 is secured around the outlet from the feeder so that good contact may be made by the batch feeder with the furnace surface and so splashing is avoided. The furnace opening 93 may be cooled by water introduced through pipe 105 and circulated through hollow frame 95 and passed out through 106. Cool air may also be passed through pipe 108. Rail support.-The batch feeder runs on wheels 12 on rails 14 and is held stationary by a screw 18 which bears against axle 19. The screw works in block 20 on bar 21 which is pivoted at 23 to the rails so as to be swung downwards out of the way when the screw 18 is to be released for the feeder to be moved away.
