Abstract

612,997. Packing and launching rockets. SMITH, M., FORREST, T. P., OWEN, A. L., ROBINSON, P. J. M., and MITCHELL, S. S. C. June 13, 1946, No. 17731. [Classes 9 (i) and 92 (ii)] A rocket 7 is packed for transit in a package comprising a plurality of cross-braced longitudinal members 1 which also serve as rails when the rocket is'launched, the package being fitted with movable end plates for limiting the longitudinal movements of the rocket in transit and with legs 24 for supporting the package in the firing position. The rear ends of the members 1 shown are braced by plates 5, and at one side there is provided a spade 6 which, with an end plate 8 against which the gases impinge, serves to steady the apparatus. Plate 8 co-operates with a movable plate near the front of the package to steady the rocket in transit, and against the front plate normally presses ground spades 18 which in turn are urged towards the plate by a fuze box 17 on a front lid 14. When required for use, the lid 14 is opened as also is the plate 8 to the positions shown, and the spades 18 are removed and fitted to the pair of supporting legs 24 which are opened out about pivot pins 34 from positions against the paekage to the position shown. The legs may be telescopic.
