Abstract

612,528. Fret-saws. FLORY, H. E. March 19, 1946, No. 8510. [Class 145 (ii)] A fret-saw has disposed in the handle an electromagnetic device driven by alternating current to impart a reciprocating movement to the blade. The ends of U-shaped frame 1 are secured to caps 4 and 5. The cap 4 is screwed on an inner cap 6 secured to the end of a handle 7 in which a coil of wire is wound on a former 9. Within the former 9 an iron core 12 is slidably mounted with an extension 13 projecting through the cap 6 and being detachably secured at 14 to a blade 15. The other end of the blade is detachably secured to a rod 17 slidably mounted in the cap 5. When an alternating current is applied to the coil 8, a reciprocating movement will be carried out by the core 12 and imparted to the blade against the action of springs 19 and 20 preferably so arranged that the fundamental frequency of the systems is in tune with the frequency of the alternating current. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the frame 1 is resilient, the cap 4 is dispensed with and a threaded spindle is attached to the blade. In another modification, the frame is resilient and a rubber buffer or washer is provided instead of the helical spring 19.
