Abstract

612,280. Dimpling; punching. ENGINEERING & RESEARCH CORPORATION. May 23, 1946, No. 15595. Convention date. May 31, 1945. [Class 83 (iv)] A method of dimpling magnesium or other sheet metal which tends to crack when worked cold, consists in forcing a dimpling-tool against the metal with a pressure insufficient to dimple it while cold, maintaining such pressure and momentarily heating the metal at and adjacent the area of contact of the tool so that the pressure applied will effect the desired dimpling. High tensile sheets 30 are placed on a member 42 in electrical connection with a contact 44 and above an anvil 20 surrounding a punch 22. An upper dimpling die 2 connected to the other pole of a source of electrical energy is brought down on to the work and maintained at a given pressure until the heating effected by the flow of current softens the sheets in the area of the die which then descends on to the anvil causing the punching and dimpling of the sheets.
