Abstract
612,074. Making cased tubular rivets. GOODRICH CO., B. F. June 25, 1946, No. 19004. Convention date, July 18, 1945. Drawings to Specification. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] A cased tubular collapsable rivet is made by forming a rivet member with a shank having a threaded bore and a flanged head at one end and assembling a sheathing member thereover preferably so as to abut the flange. The sheath may itself have a flange and may be in cup form when it is desired to close the shank end of the rivet. The bore is enlarged between the flange and the threaded part to provide a weakened portion to facilitate collapse. The parts may be soldered, brazed, welded or cemented together. The inner member may be machined from bar stock or may be formed from blanks of the shank diameter that are first headed and then drilled and tapped. The sheath may be formed from sheet material by cupping or from tubular blanks by spinning and assembly is effected by forcing the sheath over the rivet. The sheath may be of aluminium or copper alloy and the rivet of stainless steel. Sheaths of rubbery or resinous plastic material may also be employed.
