[Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iv)] Relates to refuse of the kind comprising a hollow receptacle having at one end an opening for the reception of refuse, feeding means adjacent said opening for feeding refuse from the opening into the interior of the receptacle and to discharge the refuse therefrom, a shaft extending from said feeding means to the opposite end of said receptacle, said shaft and receptacle being rotatable relatively to one another to rotate the feeding means relative to said receptacle and thus feed or discharge the refuse into or out of the receptacle according to the direction of relative rotation. According to the invention, in order to prevent elongated objects such as wire, rope or articles of clothing becoming wound tightly around the shaft, the shaft is enclosed within a housing having an external diameter substantially greater than the diameter of the shaft, the said housing including a sleeve mounted for free rotation on the shaft and extending for a substantial proportion of the length of the shaft. The Figures show an embodiment in which a receptacle 13 is housed in a body 12 on a vehicle chassis 10 and is supported by rollers 14 so that it may be rotated about its longitudinal axis. Adjacent an opening 15 in the receptacle 13 is a screw 16 for feeding and discharging refuse, the blades of the screw being carried upon a hub 18 secured to the end of a shaft 19 which is rotatably mounted in a bearing 21 and driven relatively to the receptacle by means not shown. The shaft is supported intermediate its length by a bearing 23 carried by the rear end of a housing 22 secured to the receptacle 13 at 20 and is enclosed by a sleeve 24 rotatably mounted on the shaft, the ends of the sleeve being secured to flanges 25 of bearings 26 provided with hubs 27 rotatably mounted on the shaft. Rings 31 cover gaps between the bearings 26 and the hub 18 and bearing 23 respectively, whilst dust is prevented from passing to the hubs 27 by packing elements 29 in annular grooves 28 in the bearings 26. A helical rib 33 on the receptacle 13 facilitates the discharge of refuse through the opening 15.
