Abstract

611,592. Compound sheet materials. BAKELITE, Ltd., KNEWSTUBB, N. W., and JENKINS, C. N. May 6, 1946, No. 13702. [Class 140] Laminated material with a resilient, chemically-resistant surface is made by superposing fibrous sheets treated with a heat-hardenable resin, placing on one or both sides of the stack so formed a sheet of a plasticized polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride, and subjecting the assembly to heat and to a pressure above 1000 lbs. per sq. inch. The fibrous sheets may be paper, fabric, or wood veneer, the resin may be phenol-, urea-, thiourea-, or aminotriazine-aldehyde, the copolymer may be that with vinyl acetate, and the plasticizer may be tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate. The outermost sheet of fibrous material may contain an ornamental or advertising design beneath a transparent or translucent sheet of the polymer, or may be coated with an adhesive to ensure adhesion of the surface sheet, e.g. an adhesive containing a copolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, and, if desired, maleic anhydride. The assembly may contain, in the order stated; a sheet of plasticized vinyl chloride/ acetate copolymer, a sheet of alphacellulose paper impregnated with ureathiourea-formaldehyde resin and coated on the side next to the copolymer sheet with a copolymer of vinyl chloride, acetate, and maleic anhydride, a sheet of printed cambric impregnated with urea-formaldehyde resin, a sheet of white pigmented paper treated with urea-formaldehyde resin, 30 sheets of kraft paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde, and sheets of white paper, cambric, paper, and copolymer as on the other side. The material is suitable for trays, table and bar tops, or liquidsealing devices.
